A Trip Through Egypt’s History
Normally when you ask tourists travelling to Egypt what are they most enthusiastic to see most of them will say: The Pyramids.
Egypt is famous for its Pyramids that was built by the Pharaohs. What most people don’t know is that Egypt has a lot of monuments with long history. For example, Mengak Selhdar Gate in El-Darb-El-Ahmar in Souq El Selah street is one of these exquisite monuments.
The street has a lot of famous stories about it and one of its unique features is the origin of its name. It was named Souq El Selah, or the “Arms Market” because the street used to manufacture weapons in the old times such as swords and shields.
The gate on the other hand, was named after Prince Manjac El Selehdar who built a palace in this area, during the Mamluk era.
You can visit the gate that is considered a display screen for the street due to the engravings carved on its body. Fortunately, after a lot of constant negligence that resulted in the destruction of the castle, the gate is put under the country’s protection and maintenance plan.
Tourists going to Egypt should visit this street that is full of history. They can also check the gate where a lot of famous historical figures from different eras lived in through time.
When you go to check out the gate look closely at the inscription and carvings on its surface and you’ll be surprised by what you see.
